The domestication of the horse may have happened six thousand years ago. Compared to the domestication of other animal species, this is a relatively late date. Most of its behavioural patterns are deeply genetically anchored, having changed very little compared to those of its wild ancestors. This genetic specificity encourages horses to constantly practice innate behaviours. If they do not have the opportunity to do so, they suffer from mental and physical disorders, and the modern-minded horse keeper and breeder is advised to take into account the units, values and durations listed in our book. By adopting these, the life expectancy of horses will be increased and their welfare and utility improved.
